Default windows media player says my video content format is not supported.?

my friends and i filmed our hamlet project for english on a sony camera that records on those little dvds. well anyway, we finish filming and my friend finalizes the disc and hands it over to me. I have a dell vostro 1500 and it's brand new with no usage by me. I can play the dvd, but i can't import the video into Movie Maker. It says the format is not supported or something. So how do i fix this?? Is there a program that converts files??Thanks in advance !!!!!!!!!!!!
