Have batteries gotten smaller since the 60's, it should take 4 AA 1.5 volt batteries and they just don't quite fit.It is just the length that seems off, can't quite get the door shut. All resources say 4 1.5 V batteries and I assure you AAA don't have the girth to fill the space provided for the batteries.

are you sure its AA or AAA as AAA are smaller, look on camera as sometimes tells you what battery when you open battery compartment
