The Canon GL2 is still one of the best MiniDV camcorders available. Another great option (if you can find one) is the Panasonic PV-GS500. Both camcorders support external microphones.

If you really need great still images, you may want to consider investing in a digital camera or at the very minimum an HD camcorder like the Canon HV20, which will get you better still images and the external microphone support you need.
