Compress MPG files from Sony camcorder

Hi

I have a sony harddisk camcorder. I would like to compress the video files(MPG) files generated from the camcorder. I have some MPG compressing softwares. But I am not able to compress the MPG files generated through the Sony camcorder.

Has any one faced the similar problem?

Is there any soultion for this?
