Default Windows media player not working

Hi,
my WMP refuses to work anymore. If I try and open it or open anything
that would automatically play in it then I just get a message saying
windows media player has stopped working, it doesn't open at all.
I've tried a few things I've found on forums and stuff but have
absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
This is the problem:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: wmplayer.exe
Application Version: 11.0.6000.6349
Application Timestamp: 494727bd
Fault Module Name: OLEAUT32.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6000.16609
Fault Module Timestamp: 4757753e
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000049b0
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057
Additional Information 1: 631e
Additional Information 2: 0f8d2fd92b837c9dbc44acd9a6c5a20c
Additional Information 3: 06df
Additional Information 4: ca97d6fc5873a09a063c6e173006ba70

which basically means nothing to me!
I recently needed to clear space on my laptop and so moved some things
to an external hard drive, but I think this was a problem before that so
I don't think it was from me getting rid of anything important, I was
quite careful not to move anything I didn't know the use of.
If anyone can give me suggestions that would be great, thanks.

What program loads OLEAUT32.dll ?

Have you tried to unregister/rename/delete OLEAUT32.dll?

It appears that OLEAUT32.dll is a system file.

Have you applied Service Packs 1 and 2?

See: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/943899
