That's strange - none of my firewire ports nor neither of my two video
cameras have had problems at all with Vista. The camera shouldn't be in
question here. If you turn off the computer and pull the plug from the wall
for ten seconds to *completely* shut down the computer, does the firewire
port wake up on next reconnect?

The cable and the camera would not be suspect to me. The hardware would
definitely be suspect given the data so far.

I've done all of the simple things like that....and none of it worked. I've
done all of the turn off this, unplug that, delete driver this, update driver
that.

The problem that people don't understand is that because Vista works for
your computer doesn't mean it will work on others. I am sure if I went
through the trouble of posting all of my devices and all of my drivers,
someone could tell me the problem. In truth who has time for doing that? So I
did what I should have done when I bought the computer and get rid of Windows
Vista and load Windows XP. I'm a big fan of XP as it is more stable and
wasn't the beta-version that Vista is. All of the software I spent so much
money on that didn't work in Vista works with XP - so I'm happy. Oh, and the
moment I trashed that beta-version of an OS my camcorder worked. Go figure...

I'm having the exact same problem. I kinda got screwed in my situation, I
work for a production company and said in a very cocky tone to my boss "Sure
yah no problem, I just bought me a new RIG with vista, I CAN EDIT YOUR VIDEOS
EASY!"

low and behold Vista will NOT detect any of my 3 cameras in any of my
firewire ports...Vista somehow managed to detect my external hard drive once
then POOF never again.

Fortunately I still had my old PC lying around so I was able to edit my
stuff on XP just fine, it just took too long =[.

I hope this issue can get fixed soon.

"sup zach!"

Hello all.

I was having a very perplexing time with my Vista the past few days. Both with Firewire and USB for my Maxtor external hard drives (both the drives and both types of connections stopped working) and also with trying to get a generic USB hub to work with my Vista.

But with the help of people at a forum about the USB issue, not only did I fix my USB issues, but also the Firewire issue.

OK. First my stats:

DELL Inspiron 1520
Came with Vista home. I upgraded immediately to Vista Ultimate. This was about a year ago.

The hard drives with USB worked fine until recently. Never really used the firewire with it until I tried the other day. The firewire did/does work with my XP PC.

OK, here is your fix in a nutshell.

Go to DEVICE MANAGER. First, update the driver for the IEE 1394 Bus Host Controller. Right Click, UPDATE DRIVER SOFTWARE. When prompted, choose BROWSE MY COMPUTER and tell Vista where to look for the driver. Point it to: WINDOWS\WINSXS (make sure INCLUDE SUBOLDERS is checked).

It will find the driver, but will say something about not being the right one. Install it anyway.

Then, I pluged my hard drive in. It appeared under UNKNOWN DEVICE. I repeated the same steps above, and BAM, it showed up in my list of SBP2 IEEE 1394 Devices. I repeated the step for my second Maxtor Drive (even daisy chained it to the first one) and it was recognized in the same fashion.

Hope that helps for all your camcorders!

NO ... it IS a Vista problem with firewire ... my cam works fine on XP but vista won't even recognise hardware is connected. I think the thousands of complaints you find on a google search demonstrates it is Vista that IS the problem. I knew i should have stayed with Vista when I got a new system !

Some manufacturers are even advising customers that Vista WILL NOT WORK with firewire (ie Epson) ... I tried the fix suggested above ... might work with drives..doesn't for my Cam ... if anyone finds a way around this please post it
