How did you *break* WMP? You probably want to deal with that first. It's
generally going to be pretty hard to break WMP in any way in which a
reinstall would actually help, since resource protection should generally
prevent anything dumb happening. The lone exception right now that I know
of is SatelliteTVforPC 2006 which did something abominable to WMP, but
that's no longer shipping.

If I'm not wrong (some time passed and I'm not 100% sure) I installed a
famous multimedia program trial that is marked as "VISTA READY", and then
after a while unistalled all applications because of some problems with
remote control (an original HP remote I got with the PC, a Pavilion 3510.it).
BTW, HP still did not release the driver update for the remote for VISTA,
even if the Pavilion bear the logo VISTA CAPABLE.

OK - do you recall what application it was ... ?

At this point I'm only aware that a Vista reinstall would allow you to
reinstall Windows Media Player. =\
