Can somebody tell me what is a MP4

And why in Vista 64, it appears to be link to Quicktime, even though I never
had Quicktime installed on my computer

And finally, how do I open these files

Is there a way to play them without installing anything, I mean I already
have Windows Media Player, could there just be a codec for it

Wouldn't installing a codec be installing something?

The official answer from Microsoft is here:

Codec are safe, program are not, and more often than none program install
thing that you do not want, like association to their own program and then
the program that come with Vista do not work properly anymore

Well...not really...codecs can hose your
system also.

Anyway...you should like the media player
suggested by pacinitaly...because it does
not have to be installed. The link was
included in the message I guess you just
missed it...

Here it is again:

But when I click on them they just want to open Quicltime, which is not
installed on my system, and they will not play, and I can not make them open
in Windows Media Player

I previous version it was possible, from within Windows Media Player, to
change which file(s) were open in the Windows Media Player, but I can not
find this in the one included my Vista
