Default Choppy video when importing HDV from Canon HV20 on new Vista PC

I recently replaced my PC with a new HP e9150t running Vista Home Premium
64-bit. I have a Canon HV20 video camera and have been recording HDV on it
for over a year. My old PC was an HP Pavillion a1560n running Vista Ultimate
32-bit and I am satisfied with using Windows Movie Maker for HD video editing
with my camera, aside from a crash now and then.

On the new PC, the video being imported is choppy at times with an
occasional few horribly distorted frames. This seems to be related to the
HDV import because I can use Movie Maker to publish my existing projects in
WMV-HD. These distortions appear during the preview during import and
persist throughout the editing and publishing process.

One of the main reasons I bought this new PC was to improve my HD video
editing experience. This is an i7 920 with an ATI Radeon 4850 1 GB video
card and 6 GB of DDR3 RAM. I'll be happy to share any other information
about my setup.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? Please help...

Hello,

Could it be related to the 64-bit version of Vista? Unfortunately, you will
need to try installing a 32-bit OS to see if it is the one causing the
problem

Also try capturing to another hard disk (or external hard disk) rather than
the drive that Vista is running from

Thank you for the suggestions. I will try importing to an external hard
drive. Loading a 32-bit OS is not really a valid solution for me as it would
prevent me from fully utilizing my 6 GB of DDR3 RAM and my 1 GB of RAM on the
ATI Radeon 4850 video card. Even if it solved the Windows Movie Maker
problem, I would not make the trade-off to limit my hardware.

To add to my original post, I tried importing HDV with the CyberDirector
software that came with the PC and it worked fine. I'm not sure why Windows
Movie Maker can't manage to do it.

Recording to an external hard drive worked fine. And then recording to the
main drive worked fine also. Perhaps I just needed a reboot last night.
Thanks for the advice.
