I must be a total idiot for not being able to figure this out. Used handbrake with the low res ipod default settings, converted a DVD title and then dragged the result into the video library. Nothing. Then I dragged it into the video library on the ipod which returns the following message:

The .m4v cannot be copied to the ipod because it cannot be played on this ipod.

I'm using the stock presets and ipod resolution low.
