Compare Panasonic SDR-H18 to Kodak Zi8

My daughters are both cheerleaders, and I do alot of videotaping of their competition routines. I currently have an SD quality Panasonic SDR H-18 that has decent quality.

I use Sony Vegas Pro to create the video's, and then burn them using Tsunami MPEG PRO.

We have a home theater now with a 120" screen, and I am really dissatisfied with the Sd quality videos. Unfortunately, I dont' have alot of $$$ right now!

I'm considering selling my current video camera on eBay (maybe get around 120.00) and buying either the Kodak Zi8 or the Sany Xacti which are both the compact, cheaper HD video cameras. I like the convenience of a hard drive camera, but it isn't a big deal to me.

Has anybody made the switch? Are you happy with the quality? I'm just concerned as mine are high-motion videos, but mostly in decent lighting.

I always use a tripod or monopod when recording- this makes a huge difference.

Just thought of an option- I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 which is an amazing small camera; and the video is pretty good quality. The only problem with taking video with my camera is that the zoom is tricky. You have to zoom really slowly or it is very blurry. So I could possibly just stick with my camera to take the HD videos.

xr520 and battery pack

Hello guys, I was wondering if the sony invented a way to connect the big pattery pack (FH100) not directly on the back of the camcorder but using a wire that can be connect to the back of the camcorder and that has a battery holder on which I connect the FH100 battery.
I do not like the idea of having the huge FH100 battery pack connected to the back of my camcorder, making it huge.
I would prefer to carry the battery pack on my belt, connected through a wire to the back of the sony camcorder.

Is this option a sci-fi movie that I have in my head ?
Thank you

Hello guys, for years I was using minidv tapes and using the program hdvsplit to reverse partsof my minidv tapes to my pc.
I love hdvsplit because it was not cpu consuming.
I could watch the movie (fast forwarding or backforwarding it) on my camcorder and than hit the rec button on hdvsplit to record the part of the movie that I liked on my pc.

Can I do the same with the avchd files ?

Just got my HF200 (i have the european model, Canon Legria HF200) and the pricture is ok. I hoped this HD-camera would preform a lot better than a SD-camera but i find the picture to be almost the same apart from the sharper image on the HD-camera. The HF200 picture i sharp but i find it to be a little haze and the colours are not that bright/colourfull, both indoors and outdoors (only tried on cloudy days). I shoot in cinema mode and have the highest picture quality. Tried vivid but that did'nt help much. Anything else I can do in the settings? Should i buy a UV/haze filer? Will it perform indoors as well?

Am I the only one that is disappointed by this mic? I spent like $200 for it and it looks great, makes the cam look professional and the sound quality is pretty good..

BUT I noticed it records all sorts of hand movement + any small shaking of the cam which results in a strange "drummy" noise (like wind) .. the sound track is totally damaged by this. This is noticeable especially when recording in a silent room.

Here is a sample of what I mean:
vimeo dot com/958313
(listen to the noise when then they dont talk)

IMO the problem is that the "hot shoe" (HF 200) is located in the back of the body and not in the front + the mic is not fixated rigidly to the body, but it has the vibration absorber which allows it to shake and records the strange noise..

I cant use the shotgun mode as I need stereo and I already tried to lower the microphone loudness level to around -12 which is a lot.

Canon VIXIA HF100 filming fireworks advice

In about a month I'm going to use the VIXIA HF100 to record video of a very big fireworks display. If any other members on this forum have shot video of fireworks with the VIXIA series I'd like to hear any advice on settings.

The Canon VIXIA HD series camcorders do an excellent job of capturing fireworks displays true to life. I recommend them highly.

horizontal lines at PC in videos of Sony HDR-XR105E

I need help in converting raw videos to more compatible format for different media players.
I have downloaded videos on computer from Sony HDR-XR105E but I get horizontal lines on videos.
while if I download mkv or wmv hd videos from internet they dont show any horizontal lines.
is this due to the format or some plugin which is missing ?
I wanted to convert those videos to hd-wmv format but those converted videos also show lines.

while other videos are ok.

If I attach camera directly to PS3 there is no line and picture is good

Can someone help me ?

an AVCHD age, Frame Accurate or Gop Accurate?

It is now the age of AVCHD. While we are facing AVCHD format every day and every where, there grows the need to edit it. Just like what happened to MPEG2 10 years ago.

Like the editors for MPEG2, there is also the problem of GOP-accurate or frame accurate. A GOP of MPEG2 may have 15~30 frames each, but a AVCHD GOP could be seconds in duration. So, simply cut on the GOP boundary may lead to a miss of several seconds, that would be not acceptable for many users.

WYSIWYG, also spelled as What You See Is What You Get, has long been a standard demand for modern softwares. We will surely take this as a normal requirement. Hard to imagine, when a user defined a cut point on the time line, but the output is 3 seconds away from that point.

Because of the longer GOP it has, AVCHD will ask for more accurate editing tools. That is why the frame accuracy will be necessary to the industry.

Best Hard Drive - Standard Definition Camcorder for around $500

I know that this forum must see questions like this all the time, and I apologize for being another one to ask. I am looking for a SD - HDD Camcorder in the $500(Canadian) range. Hopefully not any more money than this. For the most part, this camcorder will be used outside, but occasionally, it will also be used inside. Pretty much I am looking for the most bang for my buck. Image quality is probably my number 1 concern. Yes, I know if I wanted good image quality, I should go for HD, but I don't have an HD tv, so it wouldn't do me much better. I was looking at the Panasonic H80, and I really like the looks of it, but I just wanted to make sure that their wasn't something better out their for around the same price. Like I said, I apologize to be asking this question, but this is actually a very big purchase for my wife and I and I wanted to make sure that we got the best for what we were willing to spend. Thank you all so much in advance.
Matt

I did some more researching tonight, and I think that I have narrowed it down to two different camcorders. The Panasonic SDR-H80 and the JVC GZ-MG680BU. I think on paper the Panasonic is a far superior camcorder, but from the reviews that I have read, it looks like the JVC might be the best way to go.

Any suggestions would be really greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
