Trouble getting video off of Canon ZR85

Ok, so I have an Inspiron 9100 with a firewire port. I have a 5 year old Canon ZR85 MiniDV camcorder. A couple of years ago, I connected via firewire between my Canon and the computer (running xp), the computer saw the Canon and allowed me to download my videos from the dv tapes.

Last night I noticed I had built up quite a collection of tapes again, so I start the computer (now running Windows 7) and connect the ZR85 via firewire, I get nothing (the computer never sees the device.)
I try everything I can think of as far as starting things in different order, letting the movie play, turning the camera on and off, rebooting the computer, etc; still nothing.
So I check the Windows 7 site. It says the ZR85 is compatible so should be no problem. I check the Canon site, it says should be compatible and no new drivers available, I switch out firewire cables. I check the device manager on my computer and it says the firewire port is working correctly. I check for new drivers for the port, it says they are up to date.
So basically I figure it must be the port on the camcorder?

xr520 and battery pack

Hello guys, I was wondering if the sony invented a way to connect the big pattery pack (FH100) not directly on the back of the camcorder but using a wire that can be connect to the back of the camcorder and that has a battery holder on which I connect the FH100 battery.
I do not like the idea of having the huge FH100 battery pack connected to the back of my camcorder, making it huge.
I would prefer to carry the battery pack on my belt, connected through a wire to the back of the sony camcorder.

Is this option a sci-fi movie that I have in my head ?
Thank you

Samsung HMX R10 questions...

I've just bought a Samsung HMX R10! However, I know very little about HD camcorders and there's not as much info about these camcorders on the net as the Canon. Sanyo and Sony models.

I've just started to use it with a very limited 1Gb SD card (can only get 8 mins of footage on it!) and am trying to save the footage onto DVD to play on my HDTV.

1. How do I convert the MP4 files this camcorder records so that I can play them on a standard dvd player?

2. Would the dvd files produced be SD, or could they hold HD content, but less content than a proper HDDVD?

3. Are DVDs the best way to backup/save (and obviousl be able to view) the footage I record or is it best to leave the files in MP4 format and just save them to a PC/HDD?

4. I've tried the playback direct from the camcorder to the HDTV and the clips play fine, but when I try to play the contents via the SD memory card on my PC (or even if I copy my files across to the PC) the footage is very slow/choppy. Why is this?

I have invested in a Class 6 8Gb Transcend SDHC card and a mini HD cable to connect the camcorder to my HDTV via the HDMI port rather than the composite cable.

Really looking forward to using it once I know how to properly.

Canon HF200/ S100, Panasonic TM300, Sony XR200/ 500/ 520V

I have considered the following HD camcorders:

Canon HF200, HF S100
Panasonic TM300
Sony XR200V, XR500V, XR520V

Here is my rationale in narrowing my choices:

1) Sony may be better but I don't want to deal with a HDD based camcorder (risk of data loss due to shock) and I do not like the (non-standard) memory stick

2) Panasonic TM300 is best rated on Camcorderinfo.com & is among the top 5 on CNET but that is pretty much it. The overall reviews on Panasonic TM300 are low, including Amazon

I am now down to the Canon HF200 & HF S100 - both have great reviews on Amazon (69 as of date for HF200 - 4.5 stars, 45 as of date for HF S100, 4.5 stars) Not to mention HF100 has 233 reviews of date with 4.5 stars.

Overall, the reviews tell me Canon camcorders are well accepted by the consumers/ prosumers than the Panasonic.

I currently have a 4-5 year old Panny PV-GS12 that isnt giving me the quality I am looking for. I have been looking both SD & HD alternatives. Since I use it 95% of the time to film my sons marching band halftime shows and my daughters gym meets, the capacity of a flash drive seems right in my wheel house.

Any suggestions from you guys for a decently priced (under $600) HD unit? Also, I want to make sure that anything I get will actually be an improvement in the picture quality department for filming at a high school football stadium or indoors in a gym.

I have been pouring through the net and I figured the best place to look would be a forum of people that use the hardware! :-)

What Is The Best Export Settings For Youtube HD?

Hi Guys,

New to the forum and really need some help, here is what I am trying to do. I am trying to make video's for my new web site with my Panasonic HSC-SD9 and host them on Youtube in HD.

I have had tons of problems.

I have took the video's on the Panasonic's HX recording mode which I'm sure its 9 MBPS. I then opened adobe Premiere CS4 to edit the video's.

Below are the settings I had Premiere at when I edited my video's:

General
Editing mode: AVCHD 1080p square pixel
Timebase: 25.00fps

Video Settings
Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.0000)
Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)

Audio Settings
Sample rate: 48000 samples/second

Default Sequence
Total video tracks: 3
Master track type: Stereo
Mono tracks: 0
Stereo tracks: 3
5.1 tracks: 0
Submix mono tracks: 0
Submix stereo tracks: 0
Submix 5.1 tracks: 0

The only problem I had at this point was the video was very jerky, but the main problem I am having is I don't have a clue what would be the best format to export it in so I can upload it to Youtube HD. There are so many different formats on Adobe Premiere CS4 that I don't know where to start.
I have had tons of problems.

I have took the video's on the Panasonic's HX recording mode which I'm sure its 9 MBPS. I then opened adobe Premiere CS4 to edit the video's.

Below are the settings I had Premiere at when I edited my video's:

General
Editing mode: AVCHD 1080p square pixel
Timebase: 25.00fps

Video Settings
Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.0000)
Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)

Audio Settings
Sample rate: 48000 samples/second

Default Sequence
Total video tracks: 3
Master track type: Stereo
Mono tracks: 0
Stereo tracks: 3
5.1 tracks: 0
Submix mono tracks: 0
Submix stereo tracks: 0
Submix 5.1 tracks: 0

The only problem I had at this point was the video was very jerky, but the main problem I am having is I don't have a clue what would be the best format to export it in so I can upload it to Youtube HD.
Question regarding long recordings on SR11.

I recall reading somewhere, some time back about someone having asked about this problem before. It seems that when you are recording for a long period of uninterrupted time, the SR11 will subdivide the resulting recording every 15 minutes or so into segments. This results in small interruptions in the both the sound and the picture, when trying to make a continuous product on a DVD.
Is there a way around this? I would like to know the next time I record a concert.

Microphone Canon DM-100 :-(

Am I the only one that is disappointed by this mic? I spent like $200 for it and it looks great, makes the cam look professional and the sound quality is pretty good..

BUT I noticed it records all sorts of hand movement + any small shaking of the cam which results in a strange "drummy" noise (like wind) .. the sound track is totally damaged by this. This is noticeable especially when recording in a silent room.

Here is a sample of what I mean:
vimeo dot com/958313
(listen to the noise when then they dont talk)

IMO the problem is that the "hot shoe" (HF 200) is located in the back of the body and not in the front + the mic is not fixated rigidly to the body, but it has the vibration absorber which allows it to shake and records the strange noise..

I cant use the shotgun mode as I need stereo and I already tried to lower the microphone loudness level to around -12 which is a lot.

When I import video footage longer than 4 minutes, the application always hung up. And the only way to terminate this app is to unplug the USB cable connected to the camcorder. I have no problems with the smaller video footage. I am using the standard software shipped with Canon (ImageMixer3) for importing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HD Camcorder - Editing & Compression?

I used to do a bunch of video editing 5 or so years ago with my mini-DV camera. At the time, (affordable) cameras were just starting to come out that recorded video to either HDD or DVD directly (standard def). Everything I read back then said if you do video editing, it's best to stick with mini-DV cameras because of the compression used on the other formats which really degraded quality. With all the new HD cameras typically writing directly to hard drives or memory cards, is this still the case or have things improved in that area - or does it depend on the camera?

I may be looking to upgrades soon (want to take video when scuba diving) and I'd like to make an informed buying decision. Starting to do my homework now...thanks in advance.

SD Bargains - Sony v Canon

I'm looking at getting my parents a cheaper camcorder, something SD which is so much easier to just dump onto a DVD and watch. HD just isn't worth the difference than the really nice looking high DVD quality standard definition widescreen you can also get on a budget.

So here's the dilemma - I've done a lot of research on the quality of these cameras and essentially all of them end up at 500 lines of horizontal resolution. I'm not sure what having more pixels of effective resolution helps if it isn't used. But things being equal, I've narrowed down the field and it comes down to this:

1) If I'm getting standard definition, I shouldn't be spending more than $400, $500 at MOST including media. At that price point you begin to think about high definition.

2) Canon and Sony make the best Standard Definition, not surprising. The Sanyo Xacti is entertaining but many report issues that most of us here would not tolerate (e.g. very poor field of view, low light issues, etc.) JVC makes good value items but it seems their size sensors and other factors are questionable in their camera builds. Panasonic is good but it's the same problem - tiny size sensors even though there are three of them. OK, so it's Canon v. Sony. Note, all these cameras use 1/6" sensors.

3) DV Tape v. mini-DVD/Flash: This is where it gets more difficult. Is recording on miniDV any different than Flash/DVD any more? In comparing models, while previous examples showed miniDV tape to have more effective pixel coverage, they no longer provide any greater numbers than their DVD/flash recording counterparts. The exception to this is the Sony miniDV H62 which does 520 lines of horizontal resolutions versus the 500 done by miniDV/Flash counterparts (DCR-DVD6/7/810). Does the 20 pixels difference matter at all? At 720 x 480 DVD, you're already getting more horizontal lines than will appear on the DVD.
