I respectively disagree with zachd on this. I've wasted hours trying to fix
this problem of WMP 11 not playing some of my old wmv files (these are Video
files). I tried downloading and updating codecs, video drivers, more updates,
System Restore, etc. This problem with WMP 11 came right out of the box. In
other words, the software or computer wasn't doing the job right from the
get-go. To save time and frustrating hours with tech support, I think that it
is a legitimate and efficient move to use software that works on some
applications and not use software that doesn't work. Jusr because WMP 11 is
free, doesn't mean that we have to use it. Not if it has bugs and quirks. My
WMP 11 works with 95% of my video and audio files. For those video files that
don't work properly with WMP 11, I use GOM player, which is a great freeware
device that plays 98% of all my video files and DVD's.

As a former engineer and now working in marketing and sales, I frequently
see the disconnect between engineering/tech staff and the end user. Many
engineers and techs who enjoy spending hours of trying to fix
software/firmware bugs lose sight that many consumers just want to turn on
the computer and use the software as was promised by the original developers,
in this case, Microsoft.

Again, I suggest that if you want to get to view those video filews that WMP
11 can't, download GOM player. It's free and it works.
