I do have VLC installed, but other apps can't use its decoder so WMP and
Media Center still have broken mpeg2.

as a general note, on a lark I also tried using the Windows Media Decoder
checkup utility to set the MS decoder as preferred, and that hasn't helped
either. Though I don't know if that utility even works on Vista x64, but it
was worth a shot.
